Is the app free?

Yes - the SmartyPlants app is free to download and use on iOS and Android. Everything you need to keep your plants thriving comes with your sensor.

Does it work with every kind of plant?

Yes - SmartyPlants supports all kinds of indoor plants, from low-light ferns to sun-loving succulents. It's designed for houseplants of every shape and style, helping each one find its perfect balance.

Do I need to order stems separately?

Every SmartyPlants sensor includes a stem attachment. We also offer longer stems for deeper pots, giving you more detail if you'd like an extra layer of insight.

Do I need a sensor for every plant?

You don’t need one for every plant. Most people get bundles to cover their trickiest plants first. Sensors can be moved between plants, so you can focus monitoring where it matters most at any given time.

How long does it take to learn about my plant?

SmartyPlants starts learning straight away. From the moment it's in the soil, the sensor reads moisture, light, temperature, humidity and nutrients. It'll spot anything that needs attention right away. Over time, it builds a fuller picture of your plant's environment to further tailor insights.

What is the SmartyPlants sensor?

SmartyPlants is a discreet smart sensor that helps you understand exactly what your plants need. By measuring soil moisture, nutrients, light, humidity, and temperature, it takes the guesswork out of care and helping every plant thrive effortlessly.

Does it work with every kind of plant?

Getting started is simple: 1) Charge your sensor; 2) Download the SmartyPlants app and create your account; 3) Follow the setup steps to connect to Wi-Fi; 4) Place the sensor in your plant’s soil; 5) Attach the sensor to a plant profile within the app; 6) Get insightful readings on the status of your plant. You’ll be up and running in minutes.

How does the sensor work?

Place the sensor in your plant’s soil, connect it to the app, and SmartyPlants does the rest. It monitors your plant’s environment and gently notifies you when attention’s needed - whether that’s a little more light, water, or time to move your plant to a new spot.

Do I need Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to use my sensor?

SmartyPlants connects via Wi-Fi to sync data with the app. Once connected, you'll see live updates and gentle care alerts. It doesn't require Bluetooth or any setup beyond a connection to your home Wi-Fi.

Can the sensor connect with my smart home system?

Not yet - but we're working on it. Future updates will include integrations with popular smart home platforms.

What does the sensor track?

SmartyPlants tracks the five essentials for healthy growth: Soil moisture; nutrient levels; light intensity; temperature; and humidity. All working together to keep your plants.

Is the sensor waterproof?

The sensor is water-resistant and designed for indoor use. It can handle splashes from watering, but shouldn't be submerged or left outdoors.

How long does the battery last?

Most users enjoy around 3 months of use before recharging. The sensor includes a long-life rechargeable battery and charges easily with a standard USB-C cable.

What do the lights on my sensor mean?

Each light gives you a quick glimpse into how your sensor’s doing. Power on: Hold the button until a green light appears (about 3 seconds). Power off: Hold the button until you see a red light (about 5 seconds). Charging: A solid red light means it’s charging. The light will turn off once fully charged. Automatic data updates: Your sensor flashes green every hour to confirm it’s sending new readings. Manual update: Press the button once to send data instantly - you’ll see a brief green flash. Flashing green: Indicates low power. Recharge to resume normal operation.

How do I perform a factory reset?

If you ever need to start fresh, here’s how to reset your sensor: 1.) Enter reset mode. Press the button twice quickly. The light will begin blinking white to show it’s in reset mode. 2.) Quickly while the light blinks, hold the button. When complete, the light will turn green, confirming the reset worked. 3.) Let go of the button as soon as the green light appears. - If the reset fails, you’ll see a double red blink. The sensor will return to its previous state, and you can retry again when your ready.
